Artist Bio

Billy Newman is a Jazz and Brazilian guitarist who performs in New York City for over twenty years. Since 1987 he has been traveling to Brazil in order to research Brazilian music and perform with local musicians Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Recife and Florianopolis. While a recipient of Composer’s residencies three years in a row (from 2007, 08, 09) from the prestigious institutions - Yaddo and The MacDowell Colony and most recently the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts 2023 and MacDowell again in 2024 - he had the opportunity to write much Brazilian music. He performs his original music with the “The Billy Newman Quintet” as well as Frevo, Samba, Baião, Choro, the styles of Brazilian Instrumental. His groups have played in Joe’s Pub, Jazz Forum, Barbés and various music festivals in New York plus Triboz and other venues in Brazil. Billy's other group "Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble" has performed at many major cultural venues in the city including The Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum. Billy has completed 4 CDs of his original compositions. His Solo guitar recording came out in 2016 and a collection of his original choros was recorded in 2012. He has written a book on Brazilian Guitar published by Alfred Music/National Guitar Workshop in 2002. Every year he conducts the Brazilian Guitar Workshop with 7 string guitarist Rogerio Souza in NYC.  In the Summer of 2023 Billy did his own tour of 4 Brazilian cities playing his original music with various ensembles.

Billy’s Jazz background intersected with many leading players of this day.  He formed a band in 1986 with Bruce Cox the drummer of various Jazz greats, Mal Waldron Woody Shaw and presently working with the Fred Wesley band.  The front line included Dave Douglas, internationally reknowned trumpeter.  Before this time Billy was a member of a sextet that included Vincent Herring (Nat Adderley, Wallace Roney) and Charles Davis Jr. (Roy Haynes) that played many venues around the New York area in the 1980s.  Later on Billy had a long relationship with legendary jazz electric bassist Steve Schwab. Billy’s own quintet has featured some of the heaviest players in the modern jazz scene including Kenny Grohowski – drums (Brand X, John Zorn), saxophonists Michael Attias(Paul Motian) and Eric Schugren.  Billy in recent times has played in the bands of Jorge Sylvester, Frank London and Leco Reis.

  His formal training includes Composition and Harmony with Dennis Sandole (the teacher of John Coltrane), Jazz Improvisation with famed pianist Hal Galper, Classical Guitar with Dennis Koster, and Brazilian Percussion with Vanderlei Pereira. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY and a Masters in Classical Composition(B.M.) from Brooklyn Conservatory CUNY.  He has studied composition with eminent composers such as Tania Leon and David Del Tredici.
